Disposal of construction waste, with CLT is easier.
Reduction of construction waste: CLT beats concrete 158 to 0.
In Asker, Norway, two identical sports halls of 2,735 square meters each set a new standard in the reduction of building waste.
The buildings were built by Woodcon as part of the NADA: (Nye anskaffelser for dokumentert avfallsreduksjon) project, developed by SINTEF together with the municipalities of Oslo, Asker and Bærum, which aims to reduce construction waste on construction sites through new public tenders approaches.
The aim is to provide useful tools and methods to ensure waste-free construction sites while reducing costs and environmental impact. Active from 2021 to 2024, the project integrates solutions such as the SaaS platform of Again X, which analyses emissions and waste throughout the construction process.
With their nearly 6000 square meters of CLT, these facilities demonstrate how a conscious approach to waste management can turn construction into a more sustainable process.
The timber used in the project was chosen for its ecological and functional qualities. The CLT panels used led to a significant reduction in construction waste: each square meter of Glulam installed in place of concrete produces up to 158 kg less waste, equivalent to more than 860 tonnes less waste in the specific case of Asker sports halls.
CLT: Sustainability even when it comes to construction waste disposal.
The CLT remains an efficient solution to combine sustainability and performance: it is light, durable and ensures fast work execution, with benefits on cost control and overall site emissions. The engineering precision of the material optimises each component, minimising construction waste, waste and transport, and extending the life cycle through the possibility of disassembly at the end of the useful life of the structures.
Durability and strength for structures that look to the future
The durability of buildings is also ensured by the use of specific fasteners, designed to ensure optimum sealing over time, while also minimising the materials used for the construction of the plates, with the same performance. Connectors such as WKR and ALUMAXI, used in this project as our VGZ screws, help to create solid and long-lasting structures by also decreasing the amount of steel present in the structure and demonstrating that sustainability is not a compromise, but an added value for the future of construction.
A concrete example of conscious construction
The Asker sports halls are not just places for sport, but a concrete example of how technological innovation and careful design can lead to solutions that reduce construction waste, improving the sustainability of the entire supply chain.
