Sealing tapes and comprehensive solutions
Rothoblaas sealing tapes, along with sealing products, self-adhesive membranes and passive fire protection solutions are the ideal choice to ensure durability and energy efficiency in timber, traditional and hybrid projects. The new “TAPES, MEMBRANES, SEALANTS AND FIRE PROTECTION” catalogue is a 400-page compilation of innovative products designed to meet the complex demands of construction sites and certification systems both in Italy and internationally.
Sealing tapes for timber buildings: total protection against water and air
How can we protect ourselves from the natural elements when facing the extreme force of natural events like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes or large-scale fires?
The damage caused by climate change is driving a legislative and cultural shift set to have significant impacts on the building industry.
In the context of the Green Deal, engineered timber – recognised not only for its ability to “store” CO2 but also for its anti-seismic properties – is in pole position.
And yet, how often has it been criticised by those who aren't truly familiar with it?
Water, air and fire are often considered its main enemies, but solutions providing durability and energy efficiency do exist and can be found in our TAPES, MEMBRANES, SEALANTS AND FIRE PROTECTION catalogue.
The evergreens
Timber is hygroscopic. By absorbing and releasing moisture, it changes in size. Proper protection is essential in ensuring its durability.
The catalogue includes no shortage of evergreens: essential products and solutions to prevent rising damp, sealing tapes and systems, “barrier” membranes, solutions offering temporary protection in construction sites, highly durable bituminous membranes with excellent UV resistance, and sealing tapes for doors and windows that ensure perfect ad hoc sealing.
Self-adhesive membranes: innovation for effective timber panel protection
Rothoblaas’ self-adhesive sealing membranes provide effective protection for timber panels both during transport and on site. Not only do they preserve the condition of the panels, they also offer the following advantages:
Quick installation without mechanical fastenings
The different types of sealing adhesives (adhesive films) eliminate the need for mechanical fastenings or sealing tapes, speeding up installation both in the factory and on site.
Durability and strength
They offer temporary protection for up to 12 weeks, along with extended resistance to UV rays and wear.
Ease of installation and transparency
The high transparency of the DEFENCE ADHESIVE, DEFENCE ADHESIVE SPEEDY and DEFENCE ADHESIVE TRASPIR EVO versions make them easy to apply, improving the visibility of the markings on the panel and the mounting holes.
As an alternative to self-adhesive membranes, traditional membranes are still available, offering optimal performance when installed together with Rothoblaas adhesive sealing tapes. The use of staples or nails could effectively damage the material, thus compromising its performance.
Passive fire protection: certified products for mass timber and concrete
Crossings, used to connect technical installations such as electrical wiring, pipes and ventilation ducts, are also potentially a building’s weak spot when it comes to fire safety.
We could say that a gap in the timber burns more than the timber itself. That’s why for the first time, the catalogue also includes a range of products dedicated to passive fire protection and, specifically, system penetrations.
Of the nine products in the range, four are ETA-certified for wall, roof and floor mass timber applications: MASS, UNICOLLUM, SACCUS and PANEL.
The proposed solutions are specifically designed to ensure optimal performance in all site conditions and in Mass Timber applications, while also being effective on concrete.
Test report on fire resistance: joints, walls, roofs and floors in CLT
The fire reaction class cannot reliably determine the strength of timber structures or any other building material. While it typically assesses a certain product’s behaviour when exposed to a source of heat, it does not account for the material's ability to remain intact during a fire.
To overcome this uncertainty, we participated in European research projects and conducted full-scale and laboratory testing.
In the research project “Fire Safe implementation of visible mass timber in tall buildings – compartment fire testing”, coordinated by Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), we helped define protection criteria for multi-storey buildings and tested the behaviour of timber joints when directly exposed to fire.
Specifically in the case of linear CLT joints, we ran tests in accordance with EN 1363-1:2020 to determine the fire resistance of several of our products applied to the most common joints. The test campaigns demonstrated the ability of Rothoblaas products to seal vertical and horizontal joints, ensuring effective results and good thermal insulation.
Instructions for use: products and catalogue
While not all products in the catalogue are recyclable, our commitment to sustainability leaves no room for doubt:
We provide clear and transparent documentation, ensuring all environmental data about our products are readily accessible.
Each data sheet contains detailed instructions for proper disposal in accordance with the European Waste Catalogue (EWC-CER).
We promote the concept of Design for Disassembly in timber construction to improve end-of-life product management.
We minimise packaging, using only the material strictly necessary for product handling and transport.
Our catalogues, therefore, are not simply a list of solutions but a genuine commitment to sustainable innovation. If you share our vision of environmental responsibility and want to improve the energy and thermal performance of your buildings, whatever the climate conditions, then choose lasting solutions and be one of the first to browse our new catalogue.
